A
FMA Flowbench measures air volume in Cubic Feet per Minute at a given test pressure. The
pressure is measured under the test object. Using a Percent Gauge
- (Inclined Manometer) this pressure drop together
with the pressure flow of the motors is measured against a known
(calibrated) orifice on the side of the machine (ranges such
as 100cfm, 200cfm), to determine volumetric flow: eg a flow of
90% on the 200cfm range would be 180cfm : 200 x .9 (90%) =
180. |

Accuracy
is achieved by having
LARGE Percent
gauges and multiple ranges.
|
 |
With
a FMA flowbench there's
little wasted
power
as you only have on the motors needed for any given
range. |
 |
FMA
flowbenches use air pumps to suck or blow through the
test object to achieve the test pressures. The main test pressure
used by FMA is 28in WC (which is about 1psi). But any pressure can
be used up to the limit of the Pressure Gauge.

Changing
from Inlet to Exhaust is
very simple on the FMA machines and takes about 5
seconds with colour coded Slides.

FMA
use the

custom made
Percent Gauges
that will fit on the machines for best
accuracy.
|
 |
FMA
Percent Gauges are
designed for FMA machines.
On a range of 380cfm a change of 0.5cfm can easily be seen
|
 |
For
comparative flow readings a standard test pressure is used. This
makes comparing other flowed objects easier.
|
 |
Taking
readings throughout the range of valve lifts can show holes or peaks
in the flow which can easily be seen on the
Free
Software
provided with each machine.

|
 |
For
the most accurate flow readings on cylinder heads FMA recommends
using the setup as close as possible to what it would be like on the
engine, as flow can vary quite a bit without the manifold and or
attachments connected.
